They were asked to wrap a piece of string around the thickest part of the penis shaft, and to measure the length of the string with a ruler. A similar process was requested for the erect penis. If a man had an erect penis that had a significant bend in it, he was asked to measure it using a piece of string and establish the length of the string with a ruler. For the erect penis girth, two measurements were requested, one around the head of the penis and one around the thickest part of the shaft.
